I have been running an Unraid as my network attached storage for about 5 years now. Recently I was able to test out its recoverability when a 6g WD Blue went completely belly up. Long story short, the parity protection worked like a charm and I lost no data. Crisis averted! I took the opportunity […]
3D Printed Battery Holder
In order to try and solve the comfort and battery life issues with the Quest 2, I went on Thingiverse and found a strap attachment for the Q2 and a USB power brick. Unfortunately, it’s not the same power brick that I own, so I had to figure out a way to adapt it. Using […]
Geared Up for the Metaverse
A couple of years ago, I played around with VR with the Oculus Rift headset. Being a VR neophyte at the time I was blown away by the experience and had a lot of fun with it. However, the need for it to be cable attached to my “gaming PC” in the basement eventually led […]
Plunge Into 3D Printing
Like virtual reality, 3D printing tech is by no means new. But, for the last decade it has mostly required significant tinkering skills to produce both a printer and prints of a reasonable quality. But, in the last few years the tech has really hit its stride and is now a true commodity with even Microcenter jumping […]
Finally A New Camera System
It’s been quite awhile since I blogged anything related to tech. Recently I made a HUGE purchase that I’m ecstatic about, so here we go. I’ve been using a workhorse Canon 70d with a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 lens for years to capture all types of events. It’s served me quite well, but is getting a […]
Power Point Eye Charts
The other day I was obliged to step in and give a couple of different presentations in front of technical audiences using Power Point decks assembled by other team members. The material was reasonably familiar (n-tier web architecture); but, nearly every slide was an impossible tangled eye chart. As engineers and architects we love to […]
Searching for a viable Facebook/Twitter alternative
Spent a decent number of hours over the weekend looking at the field of OSS and private Facebook and Twitter alternatives. Initially, the two that leaped out at me were Diaspora* and Mastodon. I decided to take a shot at installing Diaspora, in spite of it’s messed up name, because it is pro-ported to be […]
Homemade Rift Mounts
Once taxes were done, I turned to much more important activities, like mounting my Oculus Rift sensors for better accuracy. A bit janky, but it cost about 2-cents and gets the job done.
Loath IE
Forced by employer to use Internet Explorer 11… my goodness I forgot what a HORRIBLE browser IE is/was. Took me 5 minutes just to figure out how to use favorites… and even then it was an fuggly experience.
