Off on a mini adventure attending Overland Expo in Asheville, NC. Rode for about 7 hrs in the pouring rain yesterday, which was a bit challenging with all the trucks on 81 running side by side creating whiteout conditions. Nice now and I am soaking up (pun intended) all the wisdom of guys and gals […]

Lens wipeout
Total bummer. Stopped to take a few shots of some elk bucks along side the road and the strap of my camera caught on my bikes mirror. Bye bye F2.8 35-75mm lens. Yes it’s an expensive loss, but what really pisses me off is that I am left with a 300mm lens and my phone […]
Hazard of tech misused
This is probably TMI, but I about fell on the floor laughing while going through some of my videos shot at Crater Lake. Long story short (emphasis on the long part), I forgot to turn off my helmet cam when I headed into the woods to take a leak. Won’t post it, but everything was […]
Auto tech
Some automobile technology for you… ok… eye candy is probably the better term. I was bumming around Monterey, CA, which was absolutely crawling with super cars for some unknown reason. While stopped on a bridge waiting on an accident road closure, I found out from this guy that it was the Pebble Beach Concourse d’ […]
If it can go wrong…
Gotta love it… first day out on a month long road trip around the country and the chip fell right out of my Visa card. Luckily I also carry an AMEX card else it would be an interesting experiment in travelling with cash only in America.
Composite fail
Today’s composite materials are amazing, making many things we touch lighter, cheaper, and often stronger than wood/steel. However, you occasionally bump up against the product designed “just strong enough” in the engineer’s mind, but in fact a failure in real world application. These pruners are a perfect example. Nice light and relatively cheap… but put […]
Junk consumer products
Oh how I do HATE cheapo consumer grade chain saws! All I wanted to do was cut a few limbs for spring cleanup. Instead I spent 4 hrs taking apart the carb, replacing the fuel line, replacing the pull rope, and finally the spark plug, only to find that it has a trashed reed valve […]
Win10 teething problems
Nothing but problems since upgrading to Windows 10. Although the user interface is much nicer than 7 and worlds better than the piece of garbage 8.x, I highly advise against upgrading for now. My guess is that it’s an upgrade issue as virtually all the chatter re: problems with W10 seem to relate to upgrades.
Chip cards
Most of us have at least one “chip” card at this point. Here’s a decent article that explains what it’s all about. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/credit-card-chips-emv-wont-defeat-data-thieves/story?id=33504803

The real use case driving adoption of home security cameras…
