I am super stoked about my retro gaming system project. I discovered that RetroPie includes support for retro PC games via integrated DosBox.
To take it for a trial run, I loaded an old (1993) game from Apogee Software called Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure. After some fiddling around to get the install right and the screen scaling setup correct for the laptop I was able to play it with not issues!
Playing this very simple game took me back to a happy time when I was near my peak of programming prowess working with a small development team in the early days of PC computing. Basically I and my team mates were very much the stereotypical mirrored shade wearing pizza scarfing “hackers” of the time.
Cosmo was one of the games our whole development team really got into big time. We would all come in early and knock off for a long lunch competing with each other to rack up a high score! Good times!
One of the cute Easter Eggs of the retro game is this screen touting Apogee’s dial in BBS that supported OMG speeds up to 14.4K baud; which, was blazing for the time. There was also a screen advertising for AOL, which is equally hilarious 😆
