Under the category of “Things to do as a Kept Man,” I undertook to organize our 5000+ song iTunes library. First, let me say that I was amazed at how difficult and time consuming the process is. One would think that in 2012 it would be a 5 minute process. For those interested, I found several tools absolutely invaluable to the process. SongGenie and CoverScout by Equinux ($) were invaluable in getting song metadata correct as the 1st part in the process. SongGenie was pretty amazing in that it actually does audio sampling of the track to create an audio “fingerprint” that it uses to match against a database. The technology (but not the database) is essentially the same as used in the Shazam app for iOS. Also used multiple scripts from http://dougscripts.com/itunes/ to complete the process of correctly embedding album art and metadata into each and every track. If you use OS X for your iTunes, I highly recommend checking out Doug Scripts as I’m sure you’ll find some that are useful. Lastly, I should note that all this was accomplished on my Macbook Pro. I am not sure of the process for WinTel. Happy time wasting!
