Finally A New Camera System

It’s been quite awhile since I blogged anything related to tech. Recently I made a HUGE purchase that I’m ecstatic about, so here we go. I’ve been using a workhorse Canon 70d with a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 lens for years to capture all types of events. It’s served me quite well, but is getting a bit long in the tooth. There were several key features I was looking for, but the most import one was dual media cards. A few years ago I had a Lexar SD card go bad and lost an entire irreplaceable shoot of my friend’s new baby daughter coming home. I’m not a pro photographer… more of a “prosumer,” but yea after that experience I vowed to never let it happen again.

Anyway, addition features I was looking for was a bit more shutter speed (>5 frames/second), full frame, better auto-focus, 4K video, better ISO, and more mega-pixels. I’ve been holding off for years because advances in mirror less technology was moving at a blistering pace AND the full frame mirror less cameras were HUGE $$.

Recently Sony came out with a new A7R IV less than a year after releasing the ground breaking A7R III. So huge numbers of Sony shooters are switching over to the new beast and eBaying their RIIIs. This caused a huge drop in price for the RIII, creating the perfect buying opportunity… so I went for it. I found a nice RIII coupled with a Sony 24-105 G F4 lens. This setup gives me everything I was looking for in terms of new features and provides about the same focal length I’m use to shooting with (Sigma 17-50 was on the APS-C 70D sensor giving it an effective focal length of 27-80). The only thing I’m missing is a stop of light in that the new lens is F4 vs. the F2.8 I’m use to with my prior setup (and yes it does make a bit of a difference).

So far I’ve had limited opportunity to use the camera and am still setting it up. But from what I’ve seen, I’m going to love it…. stay tuned.
