I’ve been using If This Then That (IFTTT) for several years to automate various online and home automation activities. Recently, I discovered a new similar, yet vastly more powerful, tool for Android called Tasker. If you’re a bit of a technical geek and really want to ramp up the usefulness of your Android device, check it out. As an example, with Tasker and a simple add-on called AutoVoice, you can create your own totally custom commands for Google Search (aka Ok Google). In about 5 minutes, I created a custom command where I simply speak “mute my ringer.” Through another simple add-on to tasker, I linked my Vera home automation hub, so now I can simply speak into my Samsung S5 to do things like “turn on the garage light” and “turn off all my home lights.” Yes, it’s very “geek,” but still pretty awesome. Reminds me of one of the Big Bang episodes. Here’s a simple tutorial to get you started.
